Where I am and what I am looking at

linkedin 2026-10-01 Last week, during Zurich Art Weekend and just before Art Basel, I found myself thinking less about the art market — and more about what culture actually does for places. At a discussion hosted by Swiss Post Art in Periphery, the focus was on rural biennales and exhibitions in Switzerland. But for me, the conversation opened a broader question: Who is cultural development really for? Culture is often discussed as a driver of tourism, visibility, regeneration or economic growth. But its deeper impact may be different: helping people feel that a place belongs to them — and that they belong to it. What stayed with me was a simple idea: Art cannot simply be imported into a place. It needs time, trust and roots. The most meaningful cultural initiatives are not only about scale, spectacle or visitor numbers. They are built through local relationships, site-specific research, local production and long-term commitment. One comment from the discussion stayed with me: “If the people in the village are not interested, the project might as well be closed.” For cities, foundations, developers, cultural institutions and companies, this feels like an important reminder: Social impact is not measured only by reach, footfall or economic uplift. It is also measured by whether people feel seen, involved and connected. Perhaps the real question is not: How do we bring culture to a place? But: How do we create the conditions for culture to emerge from a place? That difference changes everything. Grateful to the panelists for opening up such a thoughtful conversation on culture, place and belonging linkedin 2026-10-01 During Art Basel, BMW and We Are Ona hosted an immersive dinner experience around SYMBIOSIS, the latest installation by the artistic duo A.A. Murakami. The evening wasn't simply a dinner accompanying an artwork. It became an extension of the installation itself—bringing together art, design, technology and hospitality into one immersive experience. One thing I always pay attention to is how brands tell their story—not only through what they say, but through every touchpoint of an experience. What struck me most was that every element—the installation, the setting, the dinner and even the conversations—felt like part of the same narrative, rather than separate brand activations. It made me think 🤔 : What makes a collaboration between a brand and an artist truly meaningful? Too often, partnerships happen because both names are influential. They generate visibility, but not necessarily lasting impact. The strongest collaborations begin with something deeper: shared values.

About & Approach

Alöna Safin

My practice has developed through gallery leadership, close work with artists and collectors, and the production of international museum exhibitions and public programmes. This experience informs how I assess an artwork, shape a cultural project and build relationships between people and institutions.

I consider each work in the context of the artist’s practice and the collection it may become part of. In cultural projects, I look for a clear relationship between the artistic proposition, the organisation’s purpose and the people it hopes to engage.

Each engagement begins with understanding the context and the decisions that need to be made. I use research and dialogue to establish a direction, then work with the people and resources needed to carry it forward.

Clients work directly with me. When a brief calls for additional expertise, I bring in specialist collaborators and remain personally involved throughout the engagement.
